Garlic chives are like flattened chivesGarlic chives, Allium tuberosum, are also known as Chinese chives, Chinese leek, Nira and Ku chai. They’re quite similar to common chives (Allium schoenaprasum), but they have larger white flowers, instead of the purple ball-shaped ones, and garlic chives are also flatter in cross-section.

Garlic chives are good as a kidney and bladder tonic, and for treating kidney infections. They are also useful for suppressing nausea and vomiting, as well as bedwetting. For all these purposes, make a standard infusion from the chopped whole plant. Use 2-3 teaspoonfuls of herb to a cup of boiling water, allow to stand for at least 10 minutes and then sip slowly.

Like all herbal remedies, it’s important that garlic chives are grown organically, especially as they are fast growing and will take up any chemicals sprayed on them quite quickly. To find out more about growing organic garlic chives, visit the Gardenzone.
