Maqui berries – THE most powerful natural antioxidant
Maqui berries, Synaura avia, can’t be grown in your garden, unless you can reproduce the conditions found in its native Patagonia. However, it’s definitely worth adding maqui berry extract to your supplementation regimen.
If you don’t know why antioxidants are so important, let me explain. Oxygen may be necessary for life, but it also tends to wear things out by a process called oxidation. Rust on unprotected metal is a graphic example of this.
Of course, we don’t go rusty! Instead, oxygen produces free radicals in the bloodstream, and these start chain reactions that can have all sorts of damaging effects and contribute to the changes associated with aging.
It’s been discovered that antioxidants protect against coronary heart disease as well as many types of cancer. They are actually used as a treatment for strokes and diseases that affect the brain and nervous system.
The hunt has been on for the last couple of decades to find the best source of antioxidants. Some sources which have been found to be naturally high in antioxidants include red wine, cocoa, acai berries, goji berries, noni, mangosteen and lately, pomegranates.
The latest candidate to hit the scene is the Maqui berry, Synaura avia. This is a dark purple berry (similar in looks to a small black cherry) which grows in Patagonia, and is used by the Mapuche Indians for medicine.
Maqui berries are more than twice as potent as the acai berry. Although you can’t grow them (unless you live in a rainforest), you can buy concentrated extracts from Ultimate Maqui Berry.

Yes, but rather than worry about it, it’s best to make sure you get all the nutrients your body needs to fight them.

I’ve looked up the chemical composition of the berries, and so far as i can see, there is no caffeine or related compound in there. However, I would advise caution the first time you use it – use a smaller dose than normally recommended. This is assuming your sensitivity is not life threatening. If it is, then I would just avoid it until you can get a definitive answer, which this is not.
